Piper FAQ

What is Piper?

Piper is a paper wallet generator and printer. It is a mini computer combined with a small printer and a single button. Pressing the button makes it print a bitcoin paper wallet.

What else can Piper do?

Piper has an HDMI port and a USB port and runs a full Linux distribution, so you can hook it up like a computer and customize your paper wallets, or simply use your own printer with Piper.

What happens when you plug in a TV/Monitor and Mouse and Keyboard?

After booting up, Piper loads up the Piper User Interface, which allows you to do advanced things like print bulk wallets or print paper wallets encrypted with a password.

What other coins can Piper print?

Piper can print these coin types: Bitcoin, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Novacoin, Feathercoin, Anoncoin, Digitalcoin, Franko, Namecoin, Peercoin, YaCoin, BBQcoin, Ixcoin, and Bitcoin Multi Signature addresses. In addition, Piper provides you with the ability to add new alt-coins through the Piper GUI software.

When will my Piper ship?

Your Piper will ship within three business days.

How long do the paper wallets last?

The image will last 20 years when stored in typical office filing conditons (In a cool, dry environment with no exposure to light). You can read more information about storage and shelf life here.

What does the button on Piper do?

Pressing it once prints a paper wallet in the form of a Public and Private key, and the QR codes to match the keys. Long-pressing the button prints two identical paper wallets at the same time, so you can keep two copies of the same paper wallet in separate locations for safety.

What does the mode switch on Piper do?

Piper has two modes: Remember and Forget. In Remember mode, Piper saves all your keypairs to it's internal memory. You can insert a USB flash drive at any time, and Piper will copy your keypairs to the flash drive for backing up. In Forget mode, keypairs are not saved and will only exit in paper form. You can switch between Remember and Forget modes at any time.

How do we know that the Piper isn't generating keys in an insecure fashion, like using a specific random seed or a bad source of entropy?

You can see the full source code for yourself and build your own Piper if you wish. You can load your own address generation software on to Piper. You can plug Piper into your TV/Monitor and Mouse and Keyboard and use the BitAddress.org client which is included with Piper and the source is cleartext since it's javascript. Piper also has a hardware random number generator built in, and it has passed all 26 of the "good" Dieharder tests for secure random number generation. Test Info - Results

Are there software updates? And if so, how does that work?

Yes! To update the software, you will plug a flash drive into your computer, download the update, copy it to the flash drive, plug the flash drive into Piper, do the update process, then restart your Piper. At this point, your keys are not stored on the USB flash drive, but for security purposes you should now back your keypairs up onto the flash drive and store it in a safe place, or destroy the flash drive.

Is Piper's cold storage resistant to quantum computing attacks?

Piper is quantum resistant. A quantum computer can find your private key given your public key, but your public key isn't revealed until you spend from an address. So, if you only spend from an address once, and use a fresh change address, you're safe from quantum computing attacks.
